Meditation and contemplation

Miklós Borsos (1906 – 1990)

„Thinking and realization are cooperative actions in art. Borders can’t be pointed between the two. Versions and possibilities are infinite. Habitude, temper, destiny are the deciding factors in the contents and values of a life’s work.”

(Miklós Borsos about art)

Sopron Monastery proudly presents a graphic collection by Miklós Borsos one of the most significant Hungarian sculptors of the 20th century.
Borsos’s sculptural work, medal art and monumental sculptures are inseparable from his drawing art.
On his single-line ink drawings Hungarian myth and tradition meets with oversimplified natural forms in a way similar to eastern calligraphy. The high number of his illustrations serves as evidence for his affection to literature.
Borsos approached art in a renaissance way, bounded with deep roots to the universal values of human culture, to the Bible and the Christian culture, to the Greco-Roman mythology and the anthropocentric approach of the renaissance era. Miklós Borsos’s life and art remained longing and melancholic, criticizing latently the ambivalent particularities of his age.
Miklós Borsos rewarded by the Kossuth award and the title excellent artist created many iconic public art works like the „0” milestone (1975) located at the Clark Adám square at Budapest. The artist’s permanent exhibitions can be found at Győr in the Rómer Flóris Art and Historical Museum and at Tihany at the KOGART exhibition.
